처음 가게를 시작했을 때, 나는 하루에 열 번도 넘게 웃었다. 손님 한 명 한 명에게 말을 걸고, 음식이 맛있냐고 물었고, 직원들과도 농담을 주고받았다.
하지만 요즘 나는, 말수가 줄었다. 주방에서 혼자 음식을 만들며 아무 말도 하지 않는다. “사장님 요즘 왜 이렇게 말씀이 없으세요?”라는 질문이 들려올 때마다, 나는 씁쓸하게 웃는다.
사실은 웃을 여유가 없다. 돌아가는 숫자들, 쌓여가는 세금, 늦게 오는 직원, 줄지 않는 매출. 누구에게도 쉽게 털어놓을 수 없는 무게가 말줄임표가 되어 입에 걸린다.
사장이 조용하다는 건, 포기해서가 아니라, 버티고 있다는 뜻이다.
🇦🇺 EP. 6: Why Do Small Business Owners Go So Quiet?
When I first opened the shop, I laughed more than ten times a day. I spoke to every customer, asked how the food was, and joked around with my staff.
But lately, I’ve grown quieter. In the kitchen, I cook in silence. Every time someone asks, “Boss, why don’t you talk much these days?” I just smile faintly.
The truth is, I don’t have the energy to speak. There are too many numbers spinning, taxes piling up, staff arriving late, sales not improving. It’s not something I can easily talk about — so I stay quiet.
When a small business owner goes quiet, it doesn’t mean they’ve given up. It means they’re holding on with everything they’ve got.
